AeReA is the first part of a diptych that revolves around an object long employed to signal both belonging and separation, marking the boundary between a hypothetical “us” and “them”: the flag. In constant proximity, as though part of a single anatomy, humans and flags emerge from dense darkness, leaving only them the possibility to manifest as images. The flags, in a silvery grey, appear stripped of emblems and symbols, reduced to their plastic essence—a zero point devoid of connotations, where anything can emerge, begin, or vanish. Like remnants of a recent or ancient past, ghostly figures take shape in a score of unveilings, evoking a deep and age-old kinship between two textile objects: the flag and the shroud. The title refers to two words that can graphically overlap and emerge from a single term: Ara and Aerea. The former alludes to the place once consecrated to sacrifice in ancient times, understood here as a mechanism of death inflicted as a gift to those recognised as holding supreme power. The latter indicates the physical quality of the flag, which, at the height of its symbolic force, reveals itself fully as it unfurls and lifts into the air.
