UN’WE means ‘just one’ in Changana, a Bantu language spoken in Mozambique. It alludes to a world which, whilst appearing unified by the media and social networks, remains deeply fragmented, unequal and marked by ever-widening divides. On stage, two bodies inhabit a state of constant tension: worlds drifting apart, unable to recognise their interdependence, yet both affected by the same structure of exploitation. The performers move in repetitive circles, like hamsters on an endless wheel: they pedal to the point of exhaustion just to earn enough to support their families far away. This work is the result of an artistic collaboration between Spain and Mozambique, developed through bilateral exchanges and creative projects supported by the Spanish Embassy in Mozambique and the AECID – Cooperación Española.
Following their previous work *OTEMPODIZ*, Fenias Nhumaio and Deissane Machava return as the protagonists of a piece that weaves together dance, lived experience and political reflection, transforming the body into an archive of memory, struggle and resistance. The piece takes on a specific significance within the context of Barriera di Milano, a historic and multicultural neighbourhood of Turin, shaped by migration, social stratification and constant transformation. A neighbourhood often at the centre of public debate due to its multi-ethnicity, but also a vibrant hub of life, relationships and social experimentation. UN’WE thus becomes not merely a performance, but a political and poetic act: a necessary gesture to inhabit the present through the body.
