PEOPLE USED TO DIE. The original title of the choreography is Avant les gens mouraient, created by the (LA)HORDE collective in 2014 for the École de Danse Contemporaine de Montréal (EDCM). Re-staged here for the dancers of Equilibrio Dinamico, the performance explores the Mainstream Hardcore movement, reinterpreting the languages of Hardjump, Hakken (the Gabber scene) and Jumpstyle. The set design is sparse: a barrier in the background, against which the fifteen performers in tracksuits or leggings take turns leaning, evokes the vast suburbs of Northern Europe in the early 2000s. The fast-paced rhythm of the music, the rapid jumps, the fluttering tracksuits tied at the waist and the choreographic figures known as ‘tricks’ gradually lose their original function. They are transformed into a field of inquiry into the relationship between the masses and the individual, the transmission of gestures and the body’s memory. The result is a powerful study, capable of transposing codes born in club and underground culture into a potent experience of collective, physical and rhythmic exploration.

Equilibrio Dinamico was founded in 2011 by Roberta Ferrara, the company’s current artistic director and resident choreographer. Since 2021, the company has been recognised by the Ministry of Culture, the Puglia Region and the Municipality of Bari as a Dance Production Organisation. From the outset, Roberta Ferrara has worked to build a contemporary repertory company with an international outlook, involving various choreographers in the creation of new works. Described as “a voice that stands out from the crowd, highlighting an artistic strategy that diverges from the trends of young Italian dance, with the aim of creating a company with a strong European profile, capable of fostering synergies between artists” (C. Zapparrata, Hystrio, 2022). Equilibrio Dinamico has been programmed at festivals and theatres across Europe, America and Asia and has collaborated with numerous Italian Cultural Institutes — including those in Mexico City, New York, Athens, São Paulo, San Francisco, Ankara, Cologne and Zagreb — consolidating a consistent international presence. The company maintains strong local roots, developing audience engagement and cultural mediation projects with the Puglia Culture promotion network and institutional networks, fostering closeness and dialogue with communities and citizens. The repertoire includes works by international choreographers and performers such as Jiří Pokorný, Igor Kirov, Bert Uyttenhove, Matthias Kass, Clément Bugnon, Marco Blázquez, Riccardo Buscarini, Aida Vainieri and Brandon Lagaert, Jill Crovisier, and the French collective (LA)HORDE.
